Our Mission

The Need

While Cambridge is a wealthy city, it is also a city of significant inequality. For example, households of color are 4x more likely to live under the poverty line, and the average household of color’s family income is under $42k/yr. Many children are ‘priced out’ of evening activities, and school gyms are often booked by for-profit corporate leagues serving adults who can afford to pay.

Underserved youth need safe evening activities that are free of charge and run by qualified mentors. Our youth need additional access to physical activity and support in developing positive exercise habits. Every child needs to know they have a place where caring adults are ready to support them, on and off the court!

And this is where Cambridge Basketball Lab comes in...

Our Mission

Founded in the Summer of 2023 by Matt Meyersohn, the Cambridge Basketball Lab’s mission is to provide a safe and accessible co-ed developmental space for local students to learn invaluable life lessons while enhancing their basketball skills. Through the guidance of our dedicated Coach-Mentors from the local community, we aim to foster personal growth, teamwork, and character development in our youth.

As the driving force behind Cambridge Basketball Lab's commitment to youth development, Matt’s vision and passion have played a pivotal role in shaping the transformative experiences our students undergo in the program.

The Lab has successfully engaged 162 youth in over 3,200 hours of free sessions during the initial months. Now, with the support of Cambridge Public Schools and the Cambridge War Memorial Recreation Center, Matt is expanding the Lab’s reach, providing a safe haven for Cambridge youth to develop both their basketball and life skills.

The Cambridge Basketball Lab is not just a basketball program; it's a free co-ed initiative offering mentorship, skill development, and a technology-driven approach to the game. Measurable drills empower youth to set and achieve goals, instilling a crucial life skill applicable in all aspects of their lives. If you know a young person who could benefit, take some time to learn more about our program!

Thank you for being a part of the CBL team’s journey. Together, let us make a lasting impact on the lives of Cambridge's youth.

Program Benefits

Our program is designed to provide a comprehensive developmental experience for local youth:

Skill Enhancement: Expert Coach-Mentors facilitate structured basketball training sessions to improve technical skills.

Life Lessons: Dedicated basketball curriculum with additional focus on communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Technology and Analytical Approach: Youth work with the Coach-Mentors to track a baseline assessment and create a plan to achieve specific goals. We use video and an augmented reality training app called Homecourt to track performance and progress.

Mentorship: Coach-Mentors provide guidance and support, fostering meaningful mentor-mentee relationships. Participants form bonds with consistent coaches who cater to their needs

Social Cohesion: Youth make meaningful social connections to combat loneliness and isolation. They learn how to collaborate with peers and develop together in groups.

Safe Evening Activities: At a time when many of our youth feel isolated and are engaging in negative behaviors, the Lab provides a safe and inclusive environment.
